We can often worry that our children are becoming a little too fixed in their viewpoints, but often this is a misguided idea. Children are learning all the time. How to be a person, how to develop socially at school, how to contend with their hobbies, how to deal with being disciplined appropriately, how to overcome certain issues they might have such as asthma, eating worries or a range of other issues. We often look back on our childhoods and think that we had it easy, but really, learning to be a full human being is something that takes time, and some never truly learn it to the fullest extent. In other words, we should probably cut our kids a little bit of slack, and reframe the first question.
Perhaps it can be worthwhile to help our child gain various life experiences, so they can better empathize with other people, understand some of the enormous world we live on, and potentially begin to feel comfortable with the unknown. On top of the wonderful parenting you give each and every day, this can be quite a wonderful thing to help them adopt.

Take Them Abroad
Perhaps the easiest way to show your child that there’s more to life than the areas they know is to visit new countries. Even cultures very similar to yours will have their own little personality traits that lends everything a new hue. For example, we might think that heading to Australia is simply a next stop over culturally despite the distance. But then in some areas we can realise the truly distinct influences they have, how they have their own culture and also much in the way of Asian cultural versatility thanks to the geographical proximity. Heading abroad is one of the best methods of experiencing how other people live, and the norms others accept.
It can only be healthy for a child to experience this. The more children are exposed to the world, the less likely they are to harbor feelings of xenophobia later in life, or wish to close themselves into a segmented life where they know it. If you spur a love of history in your child, you will have done them a great service. History isn’t some far-flung story that we keep hold of simply because of our interest, history has a great deal of importance to who we are, how we have developed, what our world looks like, and the progression of that course for the future. History is the story of humanity, and how we have developed in a world alien to us and have brought it, for the most part, under our control. History isn’t some disconnected part of the world either. We’re still in it. It can be easy to feel disconnected from the past due to our technological revolutions, but our current sophistication of technology has only been around for the smallest blip of the human timeline. One hundred years ago, you, yourself, reading this post would have been impossible, unless it was published and delivered to you. Before then, there’s a high chance you may not have been able to read.
History is forever interesting. From it, we can learn about our cultural roots. Children will love knowing what they came from. History can inspire them, such as learning about the Ancient Greeks or the Romans, the architects of our civilization. Learning about the World Wars (at the right time) can show them just how chaotic and horrific things can get should we not learn from history.
Learning about the triumphs and tribulations of the past can instill a deep sense of gratitude, perspective, and empathy in children. They can appreciate the comforts and freedoms they enjoy today, knowing that these were hard-won by those who came before them. Stories of explorers, inventors, and pioneers can ignite their curiosity and drive for innovation, encouraging them to pursue their own dreams and contributions to society.
If you wish for your child to gain some new perspective on the world around them, exposing them to history is perhaps one of the best methods, if not the best method. Be sure to allow your children the room to enjoy this, and to give you more insight as it comes.
Inclusion
All children learn by osmosis. This basically means that if you are an adept and passionate baker, there’s a chance that they will pick up on your energy and wish to learn that, too. This form of osmosis is why children’s developing brains can often become fluent in many languages if exposed to them as children, and why it’s much harder for adults to learn. This can apply to many different scenarios. If appropriate, including them in your passions can often help them adopt and maybe even improve upon or subvert those teachings in the future. This way you can show your child not only their own interests, but that which is in their environment.
